The World Kindness Movement is bringing joy and gratitude to the world on November 13th, World Kindness Day. The organizers behind this movement want everyone to ask themselves or others, “What does kindness mean to you?”
The day, first started in 1998 and created by a group of kindness NGOs, seeks to highlight good deeds in the community. In honor of this day, we would like to highlight Cisco’s Corporate Social Responsibility efforts around the world.
World Food Programme—which is the largest humanitarian agency in the United Nations—moves 3 million tons of food each year. The assistance World Food Programme can give to those who need food security relies on knowing the people who need it and where they are. That’s where Cisco plays a role, providing open source software to help World Food Programme create SMS and voice-response surveys. This technology allows those in need request necessary assistance.
Cisco’s Corporate Social Responsibility work also extends into disaster relief with the company’s own Tactical Operations (TacOps) team. The group of eight engineers and 300 global volunteers first deployed to Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Since then, the team has aided in many incidents around the world. TacOps is a pro-bono team that creates emergency connectivity networks for those who need to connect with community and resources during disaster times.
In the last few years TacOps has started deploying to Europe, and 10 teams have been since sent to support the refugee crisis. With Cisco Meraki-enabled WiFi set up in refugee camps, more than 600,000 people have used these networks.
