If one thing is for certain when it comes to the current Marvel Cinematic Universe, it’s that everything will change upon the release of both Avengers: Infinity War and its untitled follow-up, currently known as Avengers 4. What the Marvel roster will look like once those films roll out is an uncertainty. Will they kill off beloved characters like Iron Man, Captain America, Thor and the Hulk, or will they instead allow other characters to become, say, the new Captain America, and kill off the personality who originated them? So maybe Cap sticks around, but is no longer played by Chris Evans. Or maybe Captain America dies and is absent from the films for three or four years, and then surprises everyone by making a triumphant return.
We’ve seen both varations play out in the comics, and when Fandango spoke with Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige in support of Thor: Ragnarok (in theaters November 3), we asked him if, like in the current comics, we would ever see a female Thor appear in the movies.
“We always look back to the comics to get those ideas … sometimes very specific storylines like “Civil War,” sometimes just nuggets or characters like “Planet Hulk,” he said. “So anything that’s happened in the comics, even a female Thor, become great potentials and the ideas from which future movies can be born.”
Feige and Team Marvel are wisely keeping their future plans close to the chest for now, but that’s not to say they aren’t already working on what comes next. “We have hopes, and dreams, and ideas of what could happen beyond [Avengers 4], and I think there are a lot of exciting potential moves we could make,” Feige said.
As far as when we’ll see that first Avengers: Infinity War trailer, Feige promises it will come “sometime this year.” With only two and a half months left in the year, that should sound very promising to Marvel fans.
We’ll have more with Kevin Feige as we inch closer to the release of Thor: Ragnarok.
