We’ve seen a remarkable character develop before our eyes in the rebooted Planet of the Apes series. Caesar (Andy Serkis), an ordinary chimpanzee, inherited increased intelligence from his mother, who’d been the subject of an experiment during her pregnancy.
In Rise of the Planet of the Apes, we saw how he was raised by a well-intentioned scientist (James Franco) before he is imprisoned in a primate shelter. Cruel treatment by humans eventually prompts him to lead an uprising, freeing many of his fellow apes, who then escape into a forest.
Ten years later in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, Caesar still leads the ape colony. The apes have established a fragile, wary peace with the nearest human community, which has been decimated by a deadly virus. As things develop, Caesar faces dissension from some apes and outright attacks by some humans.
In War for the Planet of the Apes, Caesar is once again secured as the leader of the apes, but faces the daunting challenge of an epic battle that threatens their ultimate survival. The large scale of the battle and the high stakes involved have been teased in the first and second trailers so far.
Now the third and final trailer has arrived. It promises an experience that may be more devastating than anyone could have ever imagined. Watch it below.
Woody Harrelson leads a human army that intends to wipe the apes off the face of the Earth. Actors reprising their roles include Karin Konoval as Maurice, a good friend and advisor to Caesar; Judy Greer as Cornelia, Caesar’s wife; and Terry Notary as Rocket, Caesar’s friend. Steve Zahn joins the cast as “Bad Ape,” along with Amiah Miller, a young girl who can be glimpsed amongst the apes.
War for the Planet of the Apes will open in theaters on July 14.
