Warner Bros. Wants Leonardo DiCaprio to Play the Joker

Remember the rumor that Inception was really a secret Dark Knight sequel with Leonardo DiCaprio playing the Riddler? Later we learned Warner Bros. actually did want the actor for the role in the actual later sequel, The Dark Knight Rises. Well, now the studio is back to similar wishes, as The Hollywood Reporter claims they want DiCaprio for their recently announced Joker movie.

With the Dark Knight Rises hopes, Warner Bros. had the potential influence of Christopher Nolan. This time, they’ve got Martin Scorsese, who has worked with DiCaprio many more times and directed the actor in two of his five Oscar-nominated performances. DiCaprio is about to work with Scorsese on their sixth major collaboration, Killers of the Flower Moon, so maybe they can talk about another, one involving a “super dark and real” crime story set in Gotham City in the 1980s.

THR‘s report says the studio wants Scorsese, who isn’t officially signed on for the Joker origin movie yet, to bring a certain prestige and respect to their DC movies, as well as to hopefully bring DiCaprio or another A-list actor of similar stature in for the lead role. DiCaprio has never done a comic book movie or something like it. He’s been talked about for the live-action Akira remake, but nothing came of that. However, now that DiCaprio has finally won an Oscar, perhaps he’ll accept some less serious fare for a change.

Could it happen? It’s not like The Joker hasn’t been played by serious thespians before. DiCaprio’s The Departed co-star Jack Nicholson had won a couple of Oscars before playing the comic book villain in Batman, and for his performance in The Dark Knight, Heath Ledger won an Academy Award. Recently (and continually), Oscar winner Jared Leto took on the character for the DCEU. Maybe DiCaprio wasn’t even prestigious enough to play the role until he won that Oscar for The Revenant.
