Walton Goggins Joins ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp’; Here’s What We Know So Far

The Hateful Eight

Created in 1996, Marvel Studios eventually began producing their own movies, starting with Iron Man, released in May 2008. Since then,16 of their movies have opened in theaters, up to and including Spider-Man: Homecoming, and Marvel has developed an admirable reputation for making incredibly popular blockbusters that usually win favor with critics too.

Ant-Man dates back to 2006, when Marvel was still in its early days of developing their own projects. Edgar Wright and Joe Cornish worked on the script on and off over a period of about eight years. Before production was due to begin in 2014, though, Wright departed the project due to creative differences, prompting cries of concern from devoted fans. Ant-Man pressed onward under the direction of Peyton Reed and the movie opened in theaters on June 29, 2015. Eventually it earned more than $519 million at the box office worldwide.

Without any creative differences arising, development of the sequel has progressed nicely and Ant-Man and the Wasp will soon begin production. Here’s what we know so far.

Who is returning from Ant-Man?

Paul Rudd as Scott Lang, aka Ant-Man, of course. Evangeline Lilly will reprise her role as Hope van Dyne; no doubt she will make her mark as the Wasp in this one. Michael Pena and Michael Douglas are expected to return as well, portraying Luis and Hank Pym, respectively. Tip “T.I.” Harris and David Dastmalchian have indicated they will also be back as members of Lang’s crew.

Who is directing this installment?

Peyton Reed is once again directing.

Who is joining the series?

Walton Goggins (The Hateful Eight, top) is the newest cast member, according to Deadline. The report suggests that the identify of the character he’ll be playing may be revealed at Comic-Con in the coming days. We wouldn’t be surprised if he’s playing the primary villain, since he has excelled at bringing out the danger and menace in his past performances.

Randall Park was added recently; he’ll play S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Jimmy Woo. Hannah John-Kamen is said to have nabbed a new role that is key to the plot, though, like Goggins, her character’s identity has not yet been revealed.

What is known about the plot?

The filmmakers have suggested that the sequel will likely have a different dynamic because it will focus more on Hope van Dyne taking on the role of the superpowered Wasp. Just from the title, though, we expect that Ant-Man will have his own character arc to follow, especially after the events in Captain America: Civil War.

When does it come out?

July 6, 2018.
