Tom Cruise has slowly been building anticipation for a sequel to his 1980s smash hit Top Gun, which launched him into the stratosphere of Hollywood leading men. The sequel has been in development for years
Back in 2014, we heard that a new script was underway with a new writer. The next year, producer David Ellison teased the possibility that the movie might include modern drone technology, but Cruise made clear that he wanted to fly for real, with “no CGI on the jets.”
More recently, Cruise said the sequel is “definitely happening” and that production would “probably begin in the new year.” Joseph Kosinski, who worked with the actor on the sci-fi adventure Oblivion, has been touted to direct.
Now Cruise has announced the title of the sequel, as well as other hints about the movie in a new interview with Access Hollywood. Watch it below.
Cruise says that the original’s stylish tone tone will be the same in the sequel and original composer Harold Faltermeyer will provide a similar musical score. According to Cruise, Top Gun: Maverick is the title; he maintains: “I didn’t want a number.”
Pressed for details on the plot and premise, or if drones will be featured, Cruise instead emphasized that the sequel will feature … jets, which we were expecting and hoping for. All we have to do is wait until we can see Top Gun: Maverick on the biggest screen possible when it opens sometime in the future. Right now, we’re feeling “a need for speed.”
