Recently Venom, starring Tom Hardy (above) in the titular role, began production. It will be the first in a series of superpowered action adventures from Sony, based on characters that first appeared in Marvel Comics, and will hit theaters on October 5, 2018.
We’ve already heard that Sony is also developing Silver & Black, to be directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood. That movie will revolve around the Marvel characters Silver Sable and Black, two women who operate on both sides of the law; it’s scheduled for release on February 8, 2019.
Now comes word about another project in Sony’s new superpowered universe. Morbius, based on the Marvel character Morbius the Living Vampire, has secretly been in development, according to The Hollywood Reporter. A script by Burk Sharpless and Matt Sazama has recently been submitted to Sony for consideration. Depending on how that goes, the next step would be to secure a director.
Created by Roy Thomas and Bob Kane, Morbius the Living Vampire first appeared in The Amazing Spider-Man comic book in 1971. Because of a biochemical experiment, his abilities resemble those of a vampire. He began as one of Spider-Man’s antagonists, then eventually became a tragically flawed protagonist. The character has appeared on the TV shows Spider-Man: The Animated Series and Ultimate Spider-Man vs the Sinister Six.
At this point, we don’t know how Morbius will be presented in the movie. Writers Sharpless and Dazama have credits that include Dracula Untold, The Last Witch Hunter, Gods of Egypt and Power Rangers; they’ll also be working on the upcoming TV reboot Lost in Space.
Will any of the characters in Sony’s new universe cross over into another adventure? Will they even take place in the same city and time period? Time will tell.
