News Briefs: Niki Caro to Direct Disney’s Live-Action ‘Mulan’

Mulan: Niki Caro will direct Disney’s live-action version of Mulan, becoming the second woman to helm a movie budgeted at more than $100 million for the studio. Her credits include Whale Rider, McFarland, USA (above) and The Zookeeper’s Wife, due in theaters on March 31. Veteran producer Bill Wong has also joined the team. Based in Hong Kong, Wong enjoyed early success with Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. [THR]


Triple Frontier: Academy Award-nominated actor Mahershala Ali (Moonlight) is in negotiations to join Triple Frontier. Tom Hardy is confirmed to star and Channing Tatum’s deal is close to being finalized as well, according to the report. Mark Boal (Zero Dark Thirty) wrote the script and J.C. Chandor will direct. The movie is set in a dangerous border zone in South America. [Deadline]
