News Briefs: James Bond Director Sought for Disney’s Live-Action ‘Pinocchio’

Pinocchio: Academy Award-winning filmmaker Sam Mendes is in early talks to direct a live-action adaptation of Pinocchio for Disney. Chris Weitz (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story) wrote the most recent version of the script, which is inspired by the animated classic, first released in 1940 (above), about a puppet who is transformed into a little boy. Mendes directed SPECTRE and Skyfall, the two most recent James Bond spy adventures. [Deadline]

This Is the End / Non-Stop

Untitled Buddy Movie: Rihanna (This Is the End, above left) and Lupita Nyong’o (Non-Stop, above right) are in talks to star in a movie to be directed by Ava DuVernay. Issa Rae, who created HBO’s Insecure, is in talks to write the screenplay The idea for the untitled project, which is under development at Netflix, originated from a post on Twitter, which suggested that Rihanna and Nyong’o should team up in a movie as best friends who scam white men. Resident Evil: The Final Chapter

Resident Evil: We just heard that the Resident Evil movie series will be rebooted; plans are to make another six installments. Now comes word that James Wan (Aquaman) will serve as producer on the first entry, an entirely new cast will be enlisted and Greg Russo will write the script. Russo previously worked with Wan on a new version of Mortal Kombat, which is still under development. [Deadline]

Paint It Black Trailer: In an intense new trailer for Paint It Black, Alia Shawkat stars as a young woman dealing with the death of her lover. Simultaneously, she is confronted by the young man’s grieving mother (Janet McTeer), who holds her responsible for his death. Alfred Molina stars; Amber Tamblyn directed.
