New Trailer Declares ‘War for the Planet of the Apes’ Is Like No War We’ve Seen Before

War for the Planet of the Apes

What began as a hopeful foray into experimental science has now descended into an all-out war on Earth. Rise of the Planet of the Apes rebooted the series to great success, borrowing elements from the fourth entry in the original series, Conquest of the Planet of the Apes, to cook up a fresh and feisty movie.

In similar fashion, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes resembled the original fifth entry, Battle for the Planet of the Apes, though it too morphed into something quite distinctive. Dawn left things open for another direct sequel to follow and soon War for the Planet of the Apes will arrive in theaters.

Back in December, we saw the first trailer for the movie, which established the battle lines between the apes and the humans.

Reluctantly, Caesar (Andy Serkis) must lead the apes against an army commanded by the Colonel (Woody Harrelson), whose appearance calls to mind past demented military officers such as Colonel Kurtz (Marlon Brando) in Apocalypse Now.

A new trailer reinforces those impressions and also provides more suggestions about how Caesar may fight to preserve the apes and their place in the world.

Actors reprising their roles include Karin Konoval as Maurice, a good friend and advisor to Caesar; Judy Greer as Cornelia, Caesar’s wife; and Terry Notary as Rocket, Caesar’s friend. Steve Zahn joins the cast as “Bad Ape,” along with young Amiah Miller, reportedly playing a character known as Nova.

Matt Reeves returns as director and his sure hand is evident. War for the Planet of the Apes will open in theaters on July 14.
