Moviegoers Want ‘Hidden Figures’ To Win Best Picture, According to Our Survey

With a record-tying 14 nominations, many experts are picking La La Land to walk away with the coveted Best Picture award come Oscar night, but if it were up to the moviegoers, that award might just go to Hidden Figures instead.

Fandango surveyed over 8,000 moviegoers recently, asking which movies and performers they’d like to see win those elusive gold statues. In what’s now proving to be a tighter race than some had thought previously, Hidden Figures came away victorious, beating La La Land by only one percentage point. Does that mean it has a shot to win come Oscar night? We shall see…

In the other categories, those surveyed heavily favor Emma Stone (La La Land) for Best Actress, with 44% of the vote — the highest tally for a single performer — going to her. Additionally, 34% of the people think Denzel Washington (Fences) should take home Best Actor, while 29% want Jeff Bridges (Hell or High Water) for Best Supporting Actor and 38% want Viola Davis (Fences) for Best Supporting Actress.

Elsewhere, Zootopia won over the most fans, snatching 48% of the vote for Best Animated Feature. If moviegoers were to choose, Damien Chazelle (La La Land) would become the youngest director ever to win a Best Director Oscar, and Lin-Manuel Miranda (“How Far I’ll Go”) would become the youngest to win an Emmy, Tony, Grammy and Oscar (EGOT), as he’s nominated this year for his song from Disney’s Moana.
