Blade Runner 2049

Terminator: Mackenzie Davis (TV’s Halt and Catch Fire; Blade Runner 2049, above) is in negotiations to star in the next installment in the Terminator franchise. She is expected to play a character “in the vein of [Arnold] Schwarzenegger’s robotic assassin.” Tim Miller (Deadpool) will direct; Academy Award-nominated writer Billy Ray (Captain Phillips) has just come on board to polish the script. The King of Comedy

The Joker: We’ve heard that Todd Phillips (War Dogs) is cowriting a “super dark” origin story for The Joker, set in the 1980s. Now comes word that the character will be portrayed as a failed comedian “who becomes the clown prince of crime after bombing with audiences.” Reportedly, the script will include nods to Martin Scorsese’s The King of Comedy (1982, above), in which Robert De Niro starred as an aspiring comedian. The idea of The Joker as a failed comedian was previously explored in Alan Moore’s graphic novel The Killing Joke. [The Wrap]

Rob Liefeld

Extreme Universe: Among many other credits, writer Rob Liefeld (above) is known for the Extreme Universe graphic novel characters, which are now headed to Netflix. Filmmaker Akiva Goldsman will set up and oversee a so-called writers’ room with the goal of generating a series of movies “with connective tissue.” The characters include Bloodstrike, Bloodwulf, Brigade, Cybrid, Kaboom and Re-Gex.
