Movie News: Kurt Russell, Your New Santa Claus

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

Christmas Movie: Kurt Russell will play Santa Claus in a Christmas movie for Netflix. He’ll star alongside Judah Lewis (Netflix’s The Babysitter) and Darby Camp (HBO’s Big Little Lies), who will play Chicago siblings trying to catch Santa on camera to prove that he’s real, only to inadvertently cause his sleigh to crash, precipitating a Christmas crisis. San Andreas

The Expansion Project: Warner Bros. has acquired screen rights to The Expansion Project, an original screenplay by Leo Sardarian. It’s described as an action/sci-fi thriller that will revolve around a female Marine who is stranded on a hostile planet. Reportedly, Brad Peyton (San Andreas, above) will be attached to the project as director, though his deal has not yet been finalized. [The Tracking Board]


The Parts You Lose: Mary Elizabeth Winstead (FX’s Fargo, above) has joined Aaron Paul and Danny Murphy in The Parts You Lose. The thriller follows a fugitive criminal (Paul) who hides out in a family’s abandoned barn, forming a relationship with a young deaf boy (Murphy); Winstead will play the boy’s mother. Christopher Cantwell (AMC’s Halt and Catch Fire) is directing. Winstead and Paul previously acted together as a troubled married couple in James Ponsoldt’s Smashed. [Deadline]

Pacific Rim: Uprising Video: In a smashing new video, we hear from John Boyega and director Steven S. DeKnight about their intentions for Pacific Rim: Uprising, as well as see new footage from the upcoming action thriller.
