Movie News: Joe Pesci Confirmed for Scorsese’s ‘The Irishman’; Blake Lively to Star as Assassin


The Irishman: Joe Pesci, who last worked with Martin Scorsese on Casino (above), will come out of retirement to play a mob boss in The Irishman. Al Pacino, Harvey Keitel and Bobby Cannavale are all in talks to join Robert De Niro in the cast. The movie is based on I Heard You Paint Houses, a book by Charles Brandt that told the story of a mob hitman who claimed he knew what really happened to long-missing union leader Jimmy Hoffa. Production is expected to begin next month. [Deadline]

The Shallows

The Rhythm Section: Blake Lively (The Shallows, above) will star in The Rhythm Section. Based on the first of four novels in a series by Mark Burnell, the story follows a woman who becomes an assassin to track down the people responsible for the death of her family. The spy thriller will be produced by Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli (the James Bond franchise) and directed by Reed Morano (TV’s The Handmaid’s Tale). [Variety]

Suicide Squad

Scarface: Director David Ayer (Suicide Squad, above with Margot Robbie) has departed the upcoming new version of Scarface. He wrote an early draft of the screenplay, which was then revised by several writers including the Coen Brothers, before boarding the project as director in May. Diego Luna is still attached to star as a Latino gangster in Los Angeles; the movie is scheduled for release on August 10, 2018. [THR]
