Movie News: Jake Gyllenhaal to Star in ‘Finest Kind’ Crime Thriller


Finest Kind: Jake Gyllenhaal (Stronger, above), Ansel Elgort (Baby Driver) and Zendaya (Spider-Man: Homecoming) will star in Finest Kind. Brian Helgeland (L.A. Confidential) wrote the original script for the crime thriller and will also direct. Set in Boston’s criminal underworld, it revolves around two brothers (Gyllenhaal and Elgort) who strike a deal with a gang that quickly becomes quite dangerous for them. [Deadline]


V the Movie: First promoted via intriguing viral marketing (see posters above), the miniseries V (1983) followed a race of alien creatures who appear human-like and profess benevolence, but actually harbor intentions to conquer the planet. Its popularity led to a sequel miniseries, an episodic series that continued the story and a reimagining in 2009. Orange Is the New Black

Descendant: Taylor Schilling (Orange Is the New Black, above) will star in a thriller titled Descendant. She will portray a mother who begins to believe that her young son’s unusual behavior may be due to supernatural causes. Jeff Buhler (The Midnight Meat Train) wrote the original screenplay; Nicholas McCarthy (The Pact) will direct. [THR]

The Grinch

The GrinchTV Spot: We get our first look at The Grinch in its first television spot, which aired during the Olympics. Benedict Cumberbatch is the new voice of the grumpy titular character, who may have dreams of stardom as an ice skater. The animated comedy will open in theaters on November 9. [Movieclips]
