Movie News: ‘It’ Sequel Announces Release Date

It Sequel: One of the most successful movies of the year, Itwas primed for a sequel that would adapt the rest of Stephen King’s novel before its box office glory. New Line quickly made it official post-release, however, and now they’ve set a date: September 6, 2019. That’s almost exactly two years from the first movie’s debut, as the studio is sticking with the same golden timing. Presumably director Andy Muschietti will join screenwriter Gary Dauberman in returning for the follow-up, which will likely be titled It: Chapter Two. [THR]

Untitled Buddy Cop Movie: Kumail Nanjiani (pictured) is also having a great year, thanks to his indie hit The Big Sick, among other projects. Now the Pakistani-American actor is going to be an action movie star. He will be partnered with wrestler-turned-actor John Cena (Trainwreck) in an untitled buddy cop movie from director Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland). Nothing has been revealed about the plot, which was co-conceived by Fleisher, but the very premise of these two guys paired together is all the pitch that’s needed. [Deadline]

Cyrano the Moor: Speaking of two great things coming together, Disney is making a “lavish” live-action musical that mashes up Edmond Rostand’s romance play Cyrano de Bergerac and William Shakespeare’s tragedy play Othello — in case you couldn’t tell from the combo title Cyrano the Moor. Oscar-winning Moonlight writer Tarell Alvin McCraney will script the 19th century-set movie, and David Oyelowo (pictured above) will star as the title character. [Deadline]

Spielberg trailer: Steven Spielberg has a movie of his own arriving at the end of the year (The Post), but before then he’s the subject of a new feature documentary from biographical filmmaker Susan Lacy (Judy Garland: By Myself). The first trailer for the movie features the iconic filmmaker (pictured above directing Raiders of the Lost Ark) front and center alongside interviews with Leonardo DiCaprio, Martin Scorsese, Liam Neeson and others. The doc makes its cable debut on October 7. [HBO]
