Movie News: ‘Deadpool’ Director to Helm Sci-Fi ‘Neuromancer’

Neuromancer: Tim Miller (Deadpool, above with Ryan Reynolds) will direct a big-screen version of Neuromancer, based on a classic cyberpunk novel by William Gibson. First published in 1984, its hero is a former computer hacker who is down on his luck before he is employed to pull off “the ultimate hack.” The project has been in development for years; a new writer will need to be hired. The Secret: Katie Holmes (Touched With Fire, above) will star in The Secret. Andy Tennant (Hitch) will direct. Bekah Brunstetter (TV’s This Is Us) wrote the screenplay, based on a self-help book by Rhonda Byrne. Holmes will play a young widow with three children who draws close to a handyman and his philosophy of life. [THR]

The Ballad of Buster Scruggs: Back in January, we heard that Joel Coen and his brother Ethan Coen (Hail, Caesar!, above) had written and planned to direct The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, an event anthology series set in the Old West. Now comes word that Netflix has acquired the series, which will feature six episodes and is expected to launch next year. Tim Blake Nelson has been set to star as Buster Scruggs. [Variety]

The Nut Job 2: Nutty by Nature Clip. In a new clip from the animated comedy The Nut Job 2: Nutty by Nature, the heroic squirrel Surly (voiced by Will Arnett) encounters a mouse (Jackie Chan) who may or may not be a friend. The movie opens in theaters on Friday. [Movieclips]
