Movie News: Alfre Woodard Joins Disney’s ‘The Lion King’; Watch Scary ‘It’ TV Spot

The Lion King: Alfre Woodard (Annabelle, above) is the latest notable name to join the cast of Disney’s new version of The Lion King. She will voice Sarabi, the mother of Simba, to be voiced by Donald Glover, and the mate of Simba’s father Mufasa (James Earl Jones). John Kani has also been added; he will voice Rafiki, a wise baboon. Other cast members include Seth Rogen, Billy Eichner, John Oliver and Chiwetel Ejiofor. Jon Favreau is directing; the movie is due on July 19, 2019. [THR/The Wrap]

The Beguiled

Destroyer: Nicole Kidman (The Beguiled, above) is in talks to star in Destroyer. It’s described as a crime thriller set in Los Angeles, based on a script by Phil Hay and Matt Manfredi (The Invitation). Karyn Kusama, who directed The Invitation, will helm the movie. [The Tracking Board]

Stranger Things

Malignant: Rebecca Thomas (Electrick Children; Stranger Things, above) will direct Malignant. James Wan is producing the sci-fi action thriller, based on his graphic novel Malignant Man. First published in 2011, the story follows a man who thinks he has terminal cancer, but instead learns that his mysterious tumor is actually a parasite. He then must use his “incredible, otherworldly powers” to fight an evil alien. [THR]

It TV Spot: A new television spot for It captures the terror inherent in the story. Seven young friends come face to face with an ancient evil in the form of a clown known as Pennywise (Bill Skarsgard). The movie opens in theaters on September 8. [Movieclips]
