Marvel’s Kevin Feige Teases ‘Guardians Vol. 3’ Characters and a “New Age” of Marvel Movies

Marvel Studios wasted no time in showing us all how much they value writer-director James Gunn’s take on the Guardians of the Galaxy when they announced he’d return to write and direct the next Guardians movie prior to Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 hitting theaters.

With no release date set, and the third installment likely coming after Avengers 4 in 2019, we’re wondering whether that third Guardians movie will give us a clear idea of what the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe will look like following that big Avengers finale. Gunn has already said it’ll set up the next ten Marvel movies, but what did he mean by that exactly?

So we asked Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige that very question during an extensive conversation about Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and beyond.

“I think it’s a little early to know what it’s going to look like,” he told Fandango. “I think things are going to look very different at that point, but I think the early discussions we’ve had with James [Gunn] about Vol. 3 and beyond with what we’ll call the “Cosmic Universe” and the Guardian characters is very exciting. Which is why he signed up and we announced that even before Guardians Vol. 2 came out.”

One thing Feige would tease is how those post-credits scenes n Guardians Vol. 2 may set up some of what we’ll see not just in future Guardians movies, but beyond in what Feige is calling the “new age.”

“As you know from the comics, there are so many places to go and so many more characters, and there are a few characters hinted at in the [end] tag scenes of Vol. 2. All of which could be potential to see and explore more in the new age following our big Avengers films.”

We won’t spoil what characters are hinted at in those post-credit scenes (of which there are five, by the way), but one of them teases a character Guardians fans have been asking to see for awhile now. And when we mentioned the character’s name to Feige and asked if they’d show up in the next one, he laughed, and simply said, “It’s exciting!”

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 hits theaters on May 5, and tickets are on sale now right here at Fandango. We’ll have more with Marvel’s Kevin Feige as we approach its release.
