‘Logan’ Spin-off Centered on X-23 (aka Laura) Moves Forward

Logan Laura Dafne Keen

This has been an incredible year for superhero movies. Despite releasing in early March, Logan is still warmly remembered and widely discussed going into awards season.

Director James Mangold’s hit film served as a passing of the torch within 20th Century Fox’s X-Men Cinematic Universe. As Logan (Hugh Jackman) and Charles Xavier (Patrick Stewart) drove off into the proverbial sunset, a much younger group of mutants stepped onto the stage. Front and center was Laura, also known as X-23, played by newcomer Dafne Keen (above). It left many wondering when and where we’d see Laura show up again.

In May we reported on X-23’s future in X-Men Cinematic Universe. At that time producer Hutch Parker spoke on the difficulty “to find a story that we think she could carry or certainly be kind of majorly significant within … the one that we’ve been kind of discussing loosely and kicking around is more likely to be its own film.”

It makes sense that a spin-off from Logan would be similarly succinct. In addition to its Neo-Western aesthetic, what made Mangold’s film stand apart on the superhero landscape was a straightforward story about fewer yet fleshed out characters. A solo film following Laura/X-23’s next adventure could be the blueprint for another big success.

Wonder Woman

In a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Mangold confirmed they are working on a script for a Laura spin-off. However, Logan wasn’t the only influential superhero film that released this year.

Mangold remarked on Patty Jenkin’s Wonder Woman and how its impact could shape their own movie: “Patty’s success with that film only solidifies more for studios that there’s less to fear with a female protagonist. The more that keeps getting hit home, that ends up giving me more space turning around and going, ‘Well, here we are with a female protagonist. That’s incredible. And what are we going to do with her?’ And that’s where we are with that [the Laura script] right now, dreaming.”

Until more details are announced, all of us will have to keep dreaming. Could the Laura spin-off follow Logan’s claw marks down the Western genre? That’s not hard to imagine in a world where The New Mutants is going full-blown horror. In the comics Laura joins the X-Force and eventually took on the name and mantle of Wolverine.

Regardless, we know someone who cannot wait to see a Laura sequel in whatever form it takes. Hugh Jackman, after clarifying he will not be involved in any way, went on to say, “But I will be lining up on the Thursday night at 10 p.m. to watch it, though. She is just phenomenal.”
