Lily James broke out on TV’s Downton Abbey as the bright and bubbly Lady Rose MacClare, leading to her sterling starring performance in Disney’s live-action Cinderella. Since then, she’s appeared memorably in both leading and supporting roles in the historical drama The Exception and action-comedy Baby Driver (above).
Now she will display another aspect of her talent in Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again! She will portray the character of Donna in her younger years, according to Coming Soon. Who is Donna and what role does she play in the movie? Here’s a recap of what we know so far about the musical sequel, which has just started production.
What’s this sequel about?
The original followed a bride-to-be (Seyfried) who discovered that one of three men (Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, Stellan Skarsgard) might be her father, so she invited them all to attend her wedding. Meryl Streep starred as her mother, Donna. The movie featured a slew of songs by ABBA. The sequel “goes back and forth in time to show how relationships forged in the past resonate in the present.”
Who will be reprising their roles from the first movie?
Streep, Seyfried, Brosnan, Firth and Skarsgard are all returning, along with Julie Walters, Christine Baranski and Dominic Cooper.
Who are the new additions to the cast?
James is among the newly-announced additions; she has the key role as Donna, portraying a younger version of Streep’s character. Also added as younger versions of the original characters are Alexa Davies, Jessica Keenan Wynn, Jeremy Irvine, Josh Dylan and Hugh Skinner.
Will the music of ABBA be featured once again?
Yes! The movie is an all-new original musical based on the songs of ABBA.
Who is directing?
Ol Parker, who wrote The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.
When will it be released?
Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again! is set for theatrical release on July 20, 2018.
