‘Han Solo’ Movie Gets a Title; Here’s What We Know So Far

The big news of the day is that the “Untitled Han Solo Film” now has a title! The next entry in the Star Wars anthology series is — drumroll please — Solo: A Star Wars Story.

What do you think? It’s simple, it’s to the point and, honestly, what could be a better name for a stand-alone movie? Let’s quickly recap everything we know so far.

Who is playing Han Solo?

The galaxy’s most infamous smuggler will be played by 28-year-old Alden Ehrenreich. He’s been in several films over the last few years, but he really garnered attention as Hobie Doyle in the Coen Brothers’ Hail, Caesar! “Would that it were so simple.” We expect his career to hit lightspeed once the world sees him piloting the Millennium Falcon.

Who else is in the film?

Donald Glover (best known from Community, Atlanta and his phenomenal rap career) will be playing Lando Calrissian. Emilia Clarke (AKA Daenerys in Game of Thrones) plays a character named Kira, a reported love interest. Woody Harrelson, who needs no introduction, will be fulfilling a mentor role for Solo. Joonas Suotamo, who actually played a Chewbacca double in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, will be donning the fur again to bring us the Wookiee during his wonder years. Paul Bettany, Thandie Newton, Phoebe Waller-Bridge and more round out the cast.

Who is directing?

Ron Howard, but it wasn’t always that way. Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (the duo behind 21 Jump Street and The LEGO Movie) were originally attached to direct. They were well into production when Disney announced in June that the pair had left the project. Days later it was announced that Ron Howard (Apollo 13 and A Beautiful Mind) would be stepping in.

Since taking the reins, Howard has been hard at work on the production of the film. That hasn’t stopped him from whetting all of our appetites with tons of photos from the set. You can see them all here.

In fact, it was Howard who announced the official title in a fun video posted to Twitter earlier this morning:

Hey #Twitterville we just wrapped production so here’s a special message #StarWarspic.twitter.com/8QJqN5BGxr

What is known about the plot?

Disney keeps a tight lid on their Star Wars plots; just think about how much is still unknown about The Last Jedi. Obviously, this will be centered on a young Han Solo long before he met the likes of Obi-Wan Kenobi and Luke Skywalker. At that point he’s a rouge and a smuggler. Kathleen Kennedy has said the film “moves closer to a heist or Western type feel.” Also, we know that Chewy and Lando are involved in the mix.

We can surmise more details from Howard’s tweets. Consider this ominous photo with the caption “The Empire Looms Large.” That’s a helmet worn by troopers in the Death Star. Might Darth Vader himself make an appearance? Last month Howard shared this photo with a one-word question, “Spicey?” This, of course, is a reference to the spice mines of Kessel, made famous in the series by Solo’s humble brag: “You’ve never heard of the Millennium Falcon?…It’s the ship that made the Kessel Run in less than 12 parsecs.” What Han Solo origin story would be complete without that sure-to-be-cinematic feat? For the record, I’ll be timing you, Han…

When does it come out?

Solo: A Star Wars Story is scheduled to land in theaters on May 25, 2018.
