Fresh off leading yesterday’s Golden Globe nominations in seven categories with The Shape of Water, writer/director Guillermo Del Toro has announced not one, but two upcoming projects! The first is a supernatural film called Antlers, which he will produce, with Scott Cooper (Crazy Heart and Black Mass) attached to direct. The second is a remake of the 1947 film-noir Nightmare Alley, which Del Toro plans to direct himself and co-write with Kim Morgan. [Variety]

Antlers was written by Henry Chaisson and Nick Antosca and is based on a short story by Antosca. It follows a teacher who tries to protect one of her students after learning a disturbing secret about his family. It sounds like an intense ride for audiences who don’t mind their horror dipped into the supernatural. This marks yet another interesting career move for Scott Cooper who has tried his hand at romantic drama (Crazy Heart), crime films (Out of the Furnace) and an upcoming Western (Hostiles).

The original Nightmare Alley followed a mentalist (played by Tyrone Power) who spins a web of lies that ultimately proves to be his downfall. Del Toro usually orbits around the fantastical with a filmography built of comic book antiheroes (Hellboy), monster movies (Pacific Rim) and the occasional “ghost story” (Crimson Peak). I can’t wait to see what he brings to a film more rooted in reality and how his vision adapts to a noir aesthetic.

Both films will be made under the Fox Searchlight banner. “I am delighted to continue the producing partnership that has been forged with Fox Searchlight during the making of The Shape of Water,” del Toro said in a statement to Variety. “The entire team are great champions of true cinema. With both Nightmare Alley and Antlers I know we will create entertaining, elevated films.”
