In an exclusive interview with Fandango tied to the release of Ready Player One (in theaters March 29 – tickets now on sale right here), director Steven Spielberg revealed that he’ll be taking the rest of 2018 off in order to prep for back-to-back films in 2019.
When we asked which film he’d be making next, Indiana Jones 5 or West Side Story, Spielberg said that the next Indiana Jones adventure is now on deck, with shooting reportedly beginning in April of next year. These will be Spielberg’s next two movies.
“I’ll shoot Indy in ’19 and I’ll hopefully shoot West Side Story toward the end of ’19,” he said. “I’m not sure I’m going to make another movie this year. I may just work on preparing both Indy and West Side Story and spend this year in preparation for that.”
Spielberg wouldn’t reveal any further details on the next Indiana Jones movie, save for saying he’s “excited for it,” and also excited to spend more time at home after working continuously the past couple of years on Bridge of Spies, The Post and Ready Player One. “I’m excited to be able to spend more time in my house,” he said. “I’m excited about that. I don’t spend a lot of time at home. That’s going to be nice for me.”
As for Indiana Jones 5, all we really know at this point is that David Koepp is writing the script and Spielberg has promised that he is not going to kill off the character in the movie. Whether this Indiana Jones film will serve as a reboot of the series in some way or a more finite conclusion is still up in the air. Meanwhile, casting is currently underway for West Side Story, which, considering it will be shot late next year, likely will not arrive in theaters until late 2020.
We’ll have much more with Steven Spielberg as we inch closer to the March 29 release of Ready Player One. In the meantime, here is Spielberg telling us a little about how they secured all of the rights to use a number of iconic characters in Ready Player One.
