17-year old Maria Gallagos is setting her sights on a future in engineering. The high school senior at Van Buren Technical Center in Lawrenceville, Michigan credits Cisco’s Networking Academy for giving her the tools and resources for dreaming big.
“I want to be a computer analyst and work with the FBI,” says Gallagos.
Before that career however, comes college. “I want to go to Western Michigan University. That was my university dream since I was 12 so I want to go for it. I don’t know if it’s going to happen,” says Gallagos.
As an ESL student, Gallagos knows all about hard work and perseverance, but is always up for a challenge. “All labs are in English so I have to read the curriculum in English and Spanish,” Gallagos explains.
Gallagos sees herself as a role model for other girls who are considering a career in tech. “I want to be an engineer and that’s my dream,” says Gllagos. “I think it’s a challenge, but I tell girls that if I can do it, you can do it too.”
