One of the big announcements to come during a jam-packed Marvel Studios panel at this past San Diego Comic-Con was the news that Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel movie (due in theaters on March 8, 2019) was going to take place in the early ’90s, prior to the events of the first Iron Man movie. Along with that info drop came word that Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) will costar in the film and — get this — he’ll have the use of both of his eyes. That’s because Captain Marvel takes place before Fury loses an eye, forcing him to don his trademark eye patch.
When Fandango correspondent Nikki Novak sat down to chat with Sam Jackson and Ryan Reynolds for their new movie The Hitman’s Bodyguard (in theaters August 18), we had to ask him whether he was excited about playing a Nick Fury who has full use of both his eyes. For starters, he’s jazzed about it — but not necessarily for the reasons you may think.
Watch what he had to say below.
What’s amusing about this is that Jackson had no idea this was where they were going with his character until he read about online. And while he didn’t divulge any meaty info about the movie and Fury’s role in it, he did say acknowledge that having both eyes makes it a heckuva lot easier actually read his lines — tossing in the fun fact that it took him longer than usual to learn his lines when he first began playing Nick Fury because he had to read the script with one eye.
Will Captain Marvel reveal how, exactly, Nick Fury lost his eye? Only time will tell. For more on all the cool Marvel stuff that came out of that Comic-Con panel, check out our recap here. As for Jackson’s Nick Fury, he can next be seen in next May’s Avengers: Infinity War.
