Military movies based on real life tend to focus on specific battles or breakthroughs that turned the tide of a war. Megan Leavey, however, is not your average war movie.
Based on the real life of U.S. Marine corporal Megan Leavey, Kate Mara (Fantastic Four) stars as the titular soldier who served as a K9 handler. One day she’s paired up with a bomb-sniffing dog named Rex that nobody else wanted to work with because he was deemed too aggressive. The two bonded, however, and ended up being deployed to Iraq, twice, leading to a moment that would change both of their lives.
We’ve got an exclusive featurette on the movie from Blackfish director Gabriela Cowperthwaite, which does a great job of giving an overview on why everyone involved, including the real Megan Leavey, felt it was a story that needed to be told.
Megan Leavey hits theaters on June 9, 2017.
