We already knew that the upcoming Justice League will be packed with heroic characters. Not only will Batman (Ben Affleck) be teaming up with Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot), but we also expect to be treated to extended looks at superheroes Aquaman (Jason Momoa), the Flash (Ezra Miller) and Cyborg (Ray Fisher).
The cast will also include a slew of supporting characters, some we’ve seen before and others making their debut, such as Mera (Amber Heard), Vulko (Willem Dafoe), Iris West (Kiersey Clemons) and the primary villain, Steppenwolf (Ciaran Hinds). We also heard that Connie Nielsen, who plays Hippolyta, queen of the Amazons and the mother of Princess Diana in Wonder Woman, had joined the cast.
While that was certainly intriguing news at the time, now that many of us have been able to see Wonder Woman for ourselves, it’s even more fascinating. Nielsen certainly strikes an imposing figure as Hippolyta (above), who clearly has tremendous love for her daughter Diana, yet also commands her people with strength and surety on the island of Themyscira.
Now comes word that another character from that protected, secure island will be making an appearance in Justice League. Connie Nielsen told Los Angeles Times that she and Robin Wright, who portrays General Antiope (top), “got to do more in Justice League as well. As sisters as well. Kind of badass as well. We can’t say much, but …” Wright said: “And more of the story, you get some of the history.”
No details have been released yet, explaining how Queen Hippolyta and General Antiope figure into the plot, though we could easily imagine that Wonder Woman will return to the island of Themyscira and consult with them about her plans. But we’ll have to wait until Justice League opens in theaters later this year to learn more. The movie is set for release on November 17.
