7 New Aliens, Troopers and Droids Debuting in The Last Jedi

Each new Star Wars sequel brings with it a new wave of colorful alien creatures, unusual droid companions and new enemy troopers for our heroes to confront. The Last Jedi is no exception. Even with the tight veil of secrecy surrounding this film, we’ve seen glimpses of several new droids, aliens and troopers making their debut in this sequel. Here’s what you can expect in The Last Jedi.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi Porgs

If you’ve paid attention to the marketing for The Last Jedi at all, you’ve no doubt caught a few glimpses of the Porgs. These squawky critters are practically the mascots of the new movie. The Porgs are seabirds native to Ahch-To, the remote world where Luke Skywalker where has been hiding since the destruction of his Jedi Temple. And as Luke is drawn back into the battle for the galaxy, it seems that the porgs are tagging along and hitching a ride on the Millennium Falcon.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi Stormtrooper Executioner

The Stormtrooper Executioner

Look for at least one new variation of the Stormtrooper in The Last Jedi. The Stormtrooper Executioner is marked by distinctive black coloring on his armor. These troopers carry a unique laser axe weapon, one we’re assuming is capable of withstanding cutting power of a lightsaber.

According to the info Lucasfilm has released so far, it sounds like the primary purpose of Stromtrooper Executioners isn’t combat, but executing fellow First Order members who betray the organization. We can tell from the trailers that Finn will be forced to infiltrate the First Order again, and we wouldn’t be surprised if his nemesis Captain Phasma sends the Executioners to collect his head.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi Caretakers

The Caretakers

Along with the Porgs, the Caretakers are native to the planet of Ahch-To. These small, amphibious, sentient creatures maintain the crumblings structures that dot the planet and have apparently been doing so since the first Jedi Temple was established there thousands of years ago. The Caretakers seem to have a strained relationship with Luke Skywalker, tolerating his presence in their home but not necessarily welcoming the disruption.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi BB-93 BB-8

The Force Awakens introduced fans to BB-8, the most plucky little droid this side of R2-D2. But as with many things in the Star Wars franchise, BB-8 has a dark opposite. The Last Jedi will introduce BB-9E, another BB-series model loyal to the First Order. Don’t be surprised if these two droids develop a rivalry over the course of the film.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi Vulptex

The Vulptex

Not to be confused with the Pokemon character Vulpix, the Vulptex are fox-like creatures that dwell on the mineral-rich world of Crait, which looks to be the site of a major battle between the Resistance and First Order. Because Crait is so heavy in minerals, the Vulptex have developed crystalline fur. They almost look as though they’re composed of living diamond.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi Praetorian Guard

The Praetorian Guard

Emperor Palpatine had his Imperial Royal Guard, so it’s only fair that Supreme Leader Snoke has his own elite bodyguard team. Like the First Order Stormtroopers, the Praetorian Guard draw a lot of visual inspiration from their predecessors, relying on the same bright red robes. These guards also have a distinctly Japanese samurai look to them.

Each Praetorian Guard carries some form of bladed weapon, suggesting they’ve been trained in the martial arts and may be able to battle Jedi. It’s unclear whether these characters are capable of using the Force, however.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi Fathier

The Fathier

Canto Bright is one of several major new worlds being introduced to the Star Wars franchise in The Last Jedi. It’s basically the Las Vegas of a galaxy far, far away. The Fathier are a race of docile, horse-like creatures who have been domesticated and trained to race for the amusement of the planet’s gambling-addicted residents. Some admire these creatures for their beauty and speed, while others care only how fast the Fathier can run.
